A Scriptural Understanding of the Old Testament.

Rom. 15:4
“For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Rom. 15:4) “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law, you have fallen from grace.” (Gal. 5:4) “Having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” (Col. 2:14) I would encourage you to go and read every single one of these verses in its context. What you will see, is that we can learn from the Old Testament, but it is wrong to bind the OT on Christianity. So what does that mean for New Testament Christians?
Jesus consistently used the OT scriptures to defend who he was (John 8:53-59; 5:39-47). Jesus, as well as other Bible figures, believed and taught the OT “stories” as historical events. They taught them as accounts that happened, and used those accounts to teach people. In Matt. 19:3-6 Jesus teaches that “from the beginning” God created “them male and female.” Jesus recognized that Adam and Eve were living people and that they were created during the creation week. To claim ANY OTHER belief than that biblical account is to call Jesus a liar. In Matt. 24:37-39, Jesus recognized Noah’s flood as a world wide event that actually happened. We can clearly see that the Old Law was written for a certain people to obey at a certain time, and that the accounts found within are actual events. This is the way we need to approach and learn the Old Covenant. Furthermore, looking at it this way shows God’s perseverance to bring a savior and a hope of an eternal home in heaven (Rom. 15:4). I love you all.

In His service,
Steven Hugley

I agree with this perspective on approaching scripture.
