“Epitaphs”
2 Tim. 4:6-8

As a child, we would often visit the graveyards of departed family members. The older I get, the more I understand why this was important to the older generations. One important lesson I learned from an early age was that the important aspects of one’s life are recorded in their epitaphs. It was common to find phrases like, “Beloved Mother, Daughter, Sister, and Friend.” “Christian, Grandfather, Father, Son, and Missed Friend.” However, what is not recorded is what catches my notice. I’ve never seen a GPA, batting average, degrees conferred, political officiation, voting record, number of overtime hours worked, worship services missed, or the amount of dollars left in their band account. I’m not saying that some of those things aren’t necessary or important, but they are clearly not the most important. When Paul’s life was coming to an end, he knew he was going to receive “the crown of righteousness,” because he had, “fought the good fight,” and “finished the course” (2 Tim. 4:6-8). Ephesians 6 would give anyone great advice how to live out what everyone has on their epitaph. It mentions children obeying their parents, fathers teaching their children, slaves serving the Lord, and masters being fair and serving the Lord. Most of all, it mentions how to put on the Armor of God to withstand anything the devil would throw at us. When you get caught up in the daily hustle and bustle, just remember, “What’s going to be on my epitaph.”
