“Eternal Unity”
John 17:13-26

Can we only understand the Scriptures subjectively? Are we so far separated from the ancient world that it is impossible to connect to it? I submit to you the answer is resounding, “NO!” It was the Bible writers who continually pleaded for unity (1 Cor. 1:10; 1 Peter 3:8; Eph. 4:3; Phil. 2:21 John 4:12). This plea was based on the desire of our Lord and Savior. In John 17, Jesus prays to the Father before his betrayal and arrest. In His prayer he prays for Himself, the apostles, and “those also who believe in Me through their word” (John 17:20). In this prayer, Jesus not only prayed for all future believers, but He specifically prayed for them to be unified. “That they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:21). He goes on to pray, “that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me” (John 17:23). This prayer for unity lets us know that we are not so far separated from the ancient world that there is no way to connect to it. Jesus’ prayer was for us to be unified with the same unity that the Godhead shares. This is also the unity they share in the Word (John 16:12-15). Yes, there is eternal unity to be gained, and it is through a knowledge of Jesus the Christ, as revealed in Scripture. “By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ” (Eph. 3:4). I love you all!
