“Fighting Ungodly Culture”
Rom. 1:24-32

One of the many things that the first century Apostles did was fight against ungodly culture. When I think to Paul’s writings to the church at Corinth, he was directly opposed to the culture of that city. As a point of information, the most famous false god or goddess in ancient Corinth was Aphrodite. She was, among other things, the “goddess” of love, pleasure, and passion. In Corinth they had the Temple of Aphrodite at Acrocorinth, which is most famous for it’s temple prostitution. When reading the book of 1 Corinthians, it’s overtly apparent that much of what Paul is writing against and addressing is the sexual sins that were running rampant in Corinth (1 Cor. 3:16-17; 5:1-13; 6:9-11; 6:18-20). Commentator David Lipscomb points out in his commentary of 1 Corinthians, that Paul was in Corinth when he wrote the letter to the church in Rome, and he believes that the debauchery Paul writes about in Rom. 1:24-32 is a reflection of  not only Rome but Corinth as well. Why do I bring all of this up? These sexual sins they were participating in can be repented. Paul points out to the Corinthian christians, after mentioning that fornicators, adulterers, effeminate, nor homosexuals will inherit the Kingdom of God, that “such were some of you” (1 Cor. 6:9-11). This is obviously sins that can be repented of. This is a message that today’s “hook up culture” needs to hear. God’s word never fades (Isaiah 40:8), the Word of the Lord endures forever (1 Peter 1:25), and the apostolic examples set forth in the New Testament are to be followed (2 Thess. 3:14-15). Just like the first century apostles did, we are supposed to obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29) and fight against the modern culture that is ungodly, lacks morals, and stands against God’s word. The commands to the first century christians concerning sexual sins directly speaks to the culture today that promotes “hook up culture,” sexual deviancy, and all sorts of ungodly activity before marriage. Remember what the Hebrew writer said, “the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge” (Heb. 13:4). I love you all!
