“Grace does not Nullify the Need for Obedience”
Gen. 6:8

It seems like in today’s pop theology, individuals are quick to play the “grace card.” It usually sounds like, “It’s ok if I do ____________ because of grace.” Grace does not nullify the need for obedience. The best example of this is Noah. Noah was a man who had found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Gen. 6:8). Even though the Lord showed him grace, or unmerited favor, the Lord still expected him to build the boat (Gen. 6:15-16). The Lord has shown us grace today, and that is His Son who died so that we might have eternal life (Titus 2:11-12). The Lord still expects us to be His obedient children today (Heb. 5:9). Just as Noah (Gen. 6), Nadab and Abihu (Lev. 10:1-2), King Saul (1 Sam. 13:5-14), Uzzah (2 Sam. 6:3ff), King Uzziah (2 Chron. 26:16-21), & Naaman (2 Kings 5) were all expected to be obedient and follow the pattern shown them, we are expected the same. The New Testament provides a pattern for obedience (Rom. 6:17-18; Phil. 3:17; & 2 Tim. 1:13). God expects us to be obedient to this pattern. He expects the Christian to preach the word so that others may hear (Rom. 10:14-17). He expects the sinner, in response to the Gospel message, to believe that Jesus is the Christ (John 8:24), repent of the sin in their lives (Luke 13:3-5), confess that Jesus is the Son of God (Matt. 10:32-33), be baptized in water for the forgiveness of sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21), and once they’ve come into that covenant relationship with God, He expects them to live faithfully (1 John 3:4-10). Grace and obedience work in conjunction with the believer. I love you all!

Steven Hugley
