How Poor Hermeneutics Changes Doctrine

Revelation
There has been multiple false doctrines created by bible “scholars” not asking the simple questions of “who, what, when, where, and why,” most notably “Pre-millennialism.” Like I wrote about several weeks ago, does my understanding of a scripture, cause the Bible to contradict itself? If so, I am wrong. For example, pre-millennialism teaches that by studying Revelation, on can predict the signs of Jesus returning. And in His returning, he will set up His physical kingdom on earth, and reign for 1,000 years (the millennium). Does that doctrine contradict any other plain teachings in the New Testament? Yes.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone” (Matt. 35-36). “For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night” (1 Thess. 5:1-2; also see Luke 12:42-48).  There will be no signs of the 2nd coming of Christ, for He will come like a thief, unexpectedly, and it will happen in the twinkling of an eye, an instant (1 Cor. 15:52). Furthermore, when Christ does return, it will not be to set up His kingdom, because it is already here. Paul writing to the church in Colossae, in the first century, wrote “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have reception, the forgiveness of sins” (Col. 1:13-14). Christians have already been transferred to the kingdom. This whole false doctrine could be fixed if we would answer simple questions about the book of Revelation. It was written by the apostle John, while in exile on the island of Patmos, to the first century christians in Asia Minor, about overcoming the persecution of the Roman Empire, and about the things which must “soon take place” (Rev. 1:1; 4; 9). To apply the writings in Revelation to events that have not happened over 2,000 years later, negates the very first verse “the things which must soon take place.” I love you all!

In His service,
Steven Hugley
