Love

John 15:12-14
Today is the day that the religious world celebrates as “St. Valentine’s Day.” It has become a hallmark holiday that many use to celebrate love. In the Bible we see a true picture of love. On this day that the world celebrates romantic love, I have thought about what Godly love looks like. We know that Paul tells the church in Corinth “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor. 13:13 emp. added) When Jesus was questioned by the Sadducees about what the greatest commandment in the old Law he responded “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all you soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”’ (Matt. 22:37-40)  On this day it is fine to celebrate romantic love, but we must remember that love is an action as well. Paul tells the church at Ephesus that “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her … So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself…” (Eph. 5:25&28) Jesus gives us a great command concerning this principle “This is My commandments, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one that this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.”  (John 15:12-14) Jesus is our friend because He gave Himself for us and that’s how He showed His love. As Paul told the church in Rome “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:8) So as I close out every scribble, I love you all in the truest sense of the word.
