Making Disciples or Making Converts

“Making Disciples or Making Converts”
Matt. 28:18-20

Jesus commanded, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations” (Matt. 28:19). Yet, in our brotherhood today, much emphasis is placed on “conversion.” While the word “convert” or “converted” appears in some translations, such as Acts 3:19, there is a fundamental difference in philosophy between conversion and discipleship.
If my goal is merely to “convert” someone—an honorable aim—then once they accept the truth, repent, and are baptized for the remission of their sins, my task is finished. However, this approach is too narrow. It leaves new Christians as spiritual infants in a world seeking their eternal destruction. This is why Jesus said, “Go, make disciples.” Baptism is only the beginning. We must continue teaching them “all that [Jesus] commanded” (Matt. 28:20).
The word “disciple” comes from the Greek mathētēs (μαθητής, Strong’s G3101), meaning “a learner, pupil, or follower.” A disciple is not merely one who has been convinced of the truth but one who continually learns and grows in Christ. This differs from the concept of conversion, which emphasizes a one-time change. Jesus calls us not just to change minds but to train and nurture souls, guiding them into lifelong obedience and faithfulness.
I love you all!
