“Necessary Reminders”
John 21:12ff

In Hebrews 10:25, we are commanded by the Hebrew writer to assemble and to “consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds” (Heb. 10:25 NASB 1995). The word “stimulate” is translated in various ways: the ESV uses “stir up,” the NASB 2020 uses “encourage,” the NIV says “spur,” and the NLT chooses “motivate.” One of the most effective ways we can fulfill this command is by offering necessary reminders. Even those we view as “strong” Christians or leaders in the church need these reminders. They, too, need to hear about the love of God, be reassured of their purpose, and know they are making a difference. Whether strong or weak, faithful or absent, persistent or lazy, we all benefit from such encouragement.

The breakfast scene at the end of John’s Gospel provides a poignant example. Jesus takes the time to “restore” Peter, as some have described it. Peter had denied Jesus three times, and the weight of that failure undoubtedly lingered in his conscience. Jesus, knowing the critical role Peter would play in the growth of the Church, reminded him of their shared love, reassured him of his purpose, and encouraged him to remain faithful. Even Peter, who had walked with Jesus, witnessed miracles, and would ultimately defend the Gospel to the point of death, needed these reminders. Jesus even addressed Peter’s concerns about John, refocusing him on his own mission.

When we assemble, let’s make it count. Be present, and while you are there, actively stimulate, encourage, spur, stir up, and motivate one another through necessary reminders of God’s love and our shared purpose.

I love you all!

In His Service,
Steven Hugley
