Self-Worship

“Self-Worship”
John 14:6

When we read about idolatry, like in Acts 17:22-34, we picture people worshipping an idol, carved image, or some fake god made of materials. That was the most common form of idolatry for most of human history. However, our Savior in His infinite wisdom, knew a time would come where the most common form of idolatry would change. Today’s idol is the self. People who skip worship because they need a day of “self-care.” Or people who have to learn that “self-love” is the most important love. This is the worship of self. Christianity teaches the opposite. Christianity teaches that the way to find God is to deny self. ‘Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matt. 16:24-25). We are to make sure we take care of ourselves and we are to love ourselves, but not more than we love God and not at the expense of God (Luke 14:25-28). There is a lot of pop psychology that talks about finding purpose in life, finding happiness, or a myriad other distractions from finding “the way” to heaven; that is Jesus the Christ (John 14:6). Throughout the book of Acts, early Christian’s were described as being followers of “the way” (Acts 9:1; 16:17; 18:25), because there is only one way to achieve ultimate happiness, purpose, and identity. That way is in Christ alone. I love you all!
