“Steadfastness of Hope”
1 Thess. 1:3

Steadfastness is a word that echoes throughout Scripture. The Greek word ἑδραῖος (hedraios), meaning “firm, immovable, steadfast,” comes from the root meaning “seat” or “chair.” It suggests something that is secure and unshaken. James calls us to remain steadfast "under trial" (James 1:12), and he reminds us that the testing of our faith produces steadfastness (James 1:2-4). But perhaps the most powerful verse about steadfastness is found in 1 Thessalonians 1:3: “Constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father.” Here, we are told not just to be steadfast, but to be steadfast in hope.
Hope is not something wishful or uncertain as we sometimes think in our everyday language. The Greek word ἐλπίς(elpis) means trust, expectation, or confidence. It is the joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation. This kind of hope is rooted in the promises of God, who is a promise maker and a promise keeper. Even when life is difficult, filled with pain, suffering, sickness, and death, our hope remains. We can be confident in God's promises, such as His covenant with Abraham to make him a great nation (Genesis 12:2-3), or His promise to bring relief and justice through Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:6-7). Our hope, therefore, should be steadfast because it is grounded in the certainty of God's faithfulness, even in the midst of trials.
In times of hardship, we are called to hold on to this steadfast hope, knowing that God has promised to be with us and will never fail. This hope doesn’t come from wishing, but from a firm trust in the God who keeps His promises. So, in the face of challenges, let's remember to be steadfast in the hope that we have in Christ Jesus.
I love you all!
