“Thanksgiving”
Eph. 5:19-20

Tomorrow is the American holiday of Thanksgiving. If you are like me, in school you were taught that we celebrate Thanksgiving to remember the “first thanksgiving” between the “Pilgrims and the Indians.” But have you ever read the first Thanksgiving proclamation given by George Washington made in 1789? Below is the first paragraph of that proclamation, I would encourage you to go read the rest of it yourself. “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”
Congress asked the President to set aside a day of thanksgiving and prayer to God. The holiday of Thanksgiving is to remember God and reflect on His providential workings in the founding of the US. We as Christians are to be a thanksgiving people. We are to be thankful in our singing (Eph. 5:19-20), in our giving (2 Cor. 9:7-10), in our attitudes (Phil. 4:4-7), and we’re to continue in our thanksgiving on behalf of our brethren in Christ (Eph. 1:15-16). Not only tomorrow, but everyday of your life, be thankful for the blessings that are supplied to you by the almighty God (James 1:17). I love you all!

In His service,
Steven Hugley
