The Necessity of Humility

Phil. 2:3-8
“Do nothing from selfishness…” (Phil 2:3). Simple to say, but hard to do. I would argue, that humility is one of, if not the most import attribute for a Christian. One might argue for love, but if someone is not humble, then how will they love anyone but themselves? ‘But He gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble’ (James 4:6). Our acceptance of God’s grace, His Son coming to Earth (Titus 2:11; 1 John 4:9), is solely dependent on our humble attitude. In the list of the 7 things that are an abomination to God, the first one listed is “Haughty eyes,” or as the KJV translates it, “A proud look” (Prov. 6:16-19). God hates a proud look. Pride is the opposite of humility. We think that because we have more information available to us through devices, handhelds, or laptops that we are smarter, but that’s not true. We need not be so proud, and humble to God’s almighty knowledge. God’s word is still the source of absolute truth (John 17:17). Humility is a requirement to realize we need God. When teaching the Pharisees, through the parable of the guests, Jesus reminds us, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” You do not know everything. I do not know everything. Either one of us could be wrong about a number of issues, that’s why we must stay humble and study diligently to present ourselves approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed (2 Tim. 2:15). Lastly, we need not to forget the reward for humility. “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time” (1 Peter 5:6). A humble person sees the need for God, a need to submit to His word, and a need to be washed in the blood of His Son (Gal. 3:27 & Rev. 12:11). I love you all!

In His service,
Steven Hugley
