Matt. 22:34-39

When Jesus was asked, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” (Matt. 22:35-36) Jesus quoted one of the most recognizable verses in the Bible from the Shama. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matt. 22:37) One thing that Christian’s often fail at, is reading around the Old Testament quotations of the bible. I would encourage you every time you read an Old Testament quotation, go read the context and the verses following. Just like today, if someone mentions a bible verse to me, I mentally go to the context and what the overall message of that individual scripture says. In the same way, when Jesus was speaking to an audience with advanced biblical knowledge, the Pharisees, they would have done the same. So what directly follows Jesus’ quotation? “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deut. 6:4-9) Jesus was not merely saying love God, but love Him so much that He is in every single part of your day. He is the center of your life to the point that you teach Him and His words to your children all the time, and it is the foundation of your very house. Jesus was emphasizing not just you loving God and His word with everything you have, but also teaching your children to love God with all their being and have their spiritual houses based on Him. I love you all!
