The Need for Scripture Memorization

2 Peter 3:16

People twist scriptures, “as also in all his [Paul] letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction” (2 Peter 3:16). “Holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict” (Titus 1:9). “The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also … Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:2 & 15). How do you know whether what someone says is fact or belief? Scripture memorization is one of the most important things a Christian can do. All of the scriptures above tell us that there are people who purposefully try to twist scriptures and that we must be diligent in our bible study. More and more we see worldly people trying to twist God’s word to try to make it support their political agenda, contradict itself, or promote a false doctrine. You might not know an entire verse, but if you can just remember a few words, then a simple google search will remind you of the scriptures that are impressed on your heart. We are commanded to be able to defend the faith, “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15). The faith comes from the word of God (Rom. 10:17), therefore it is only logical that we need to know and memorize God’s word to defend it. I love you all!
