“The ungodly persons”
Jude 4-11

Jude warns in his letter about “ungodly persons” that had “crept in unnoticed,” and were disturbing the church in the first century. In verses 5-11, there are several references to how God will deal with the ungodly. The first example comes in V. 5 concerning the Lord rescuing the Israelites from Egyptian captivity, yet through their disobedience, all persons over the age 20, except for Joshua and Caleb, fell in the wilderness and did not see the promised land (Ex. 12-14; Num. 13-14). It seems that Jude is implying that these ungodly were Christians who had fallen away and were trying to take people with them. We know this is absolutely possible through a plethora of New Testament verses: James 5:19-20, Gal. 5:2-4, Heb. 6:4-6, and 1 Tim. 4:1-2. He then compared, in V. 7, these ungodly persons to those of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18:22-19:26). Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for their rampant immorality. Lastly, in V. 11, Jude makes three Old Testament references in a single verse: Cain, Balaam, and Korah. He said these ungodly persons had “gone the way of Cain” (Gen. 4). Cain was made to wander the Earth after God rejected his worship, and he killed Abel, his brother. They also had “rushed headlong into the error of Balaam” (Num. 22-25). Balaam was a gentile prophet that taught Balak how to get Israel to sin and be cursed by God (Num. 31:16). Korah lead a rebellion against Moses and the sons of Levi and tried to offer unauthorized worship to God (Num. 16). To be righteous is to be in the company of Job (Job. 1:6-8), Noah (Gen. 6:9), and Jesus (1 Peter 2:21-25). To live ungodly is to be in the company of the disobedient of Israel, homosexuals and sodomites of Sodom and Gomorrah, the sexually immoral of Balak, the murderous Cain, and the rebellious Korah. Make your choices wisely. I love you all!
