Thus Noah Did

Gen. 6:22

Last week I wrote about faith and about those written about in Hebrews 11. If you look at Genesis 6:22 you find a beautiful example of faith, “Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did” (emp. added). Noah is counted faithful because God told him to build and he built according to every detail given to him. In today’s world of “grace rules” people misunderstand the relationship between faith and grace. God offered grace to Noah, in that he offered him an opportunity to save his family. Noah still had to do all according to God’s word in order for that grace to be applied. If Noah had strayed from the instruction, then his inability to obey God would’ve made the grace given to him null. But, because Noah built a boat (which he had probably had never seen before), to prepare for rain (something that had not happened before Gen. 2:5-6), out of a specific wood, a certain length, width, height, with the correct number of doors windows, and decks, God grace applied to Noah and his family. After looking at all that Noah did in order to prepare for the flood it is easy to see why Peter compares Noah’s faith saving him and baptism now saving us. We have been given grace, an opportunity to be saved from God’s wrath. But, like Noah, we have to obey all of God’s commandments in order for that grace to apply (1 Peter 3:20-21; Heb. 5:9). I love you all!
