Acts 19
Often people get uncomfortable when asking about their baptism or under what conditions they were saved. So, I’ve been asking questions to get us to think in depth about the scriptures. I once had a brother in Christ tell me that as long as someone was baptized for the remission of their sins, they are saved. Which makes me ask, why did those men in Acts 19:1-7 get (re)baptized after Paul inquired about their salvation. Often the answer is, “Well they were baptized under John’s Baptism.” Which is the correct answer, but one would be wise to note that John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. Luke 3:3 says that “And he (John the baptizer) came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;”
These men were baptized for the forgiveness of their sins, but still were not in a right relationship with God. Why? Because they had obeyed false doctrine. Remember Jesus said in John 8:32 “and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” These men had obeyed error, presumably following the teachings of Apollos. John’s baptism was no longer valid for salvation (Acts 18:23-28) and therefore these men had to obey the TRUTH of God’s word. When they did that, they were saved (Acts 19:4-6). Conclusion: just because someone is baptized doesn’t mean they are saved. One must obey the truth. I love you all!
