Luke 19:11-27
We are familiar with Matthew 25 and Jesus’ parable of the talents. We are less familiar with Luke’s account of this parable. Luke recalls this talent as a “mina” which was worth about 100 days pay. This nobleman went on a journey and left ten mins with his slaves, or 1,000 days worth of pay. When he returned he asked them to give an account of what was entrusted to them. The first slave took one mina and gained nine more while the second made four more and lastly the last slave did not make or lose a mina but rather hid it. This could be equivalent to a christian not making more christians because they hid their faith. Jesus expects us to work for him and make more christians (Matt. 28:18-20). Jesus has given us a mina, our saved soul, and he expects us to go out and teach more people about him. If we only get ten or five that’s fine, but to not get any because we hide our faith is unacceptable. The slave who did not make more was called a worthless slave (Luke 19:22) and his mina was taken away from him. It was given to the slave who had ten because he understood the value of what was given. The salvation that we as christians have is worth more than any amount we can put on it. We can not hide our faith! We must show people how thankful we are to have salvation and share it with them so they have the opportunity to go to heaven as well. We must worth with the mina that has been given to us and make as many as possible (Matt. 13:23).
